Singles:
With the first day of classes came the release of new singles from two artists: Shakira and Foster the People. Both singles mark the return of the artists who have not been active since 2011 and bring promise of the upcoming March releases of both of their albums.
“Can’t remember to forget you” – Shakira feat. Rihanna
Hearing these two uncaged-beast-like voices together makes you wonder: what took them so long? The bass-heavy verse dances to the same rhythm as Shakira’s “Rabiosa,” but the chorus is reminiscent of her older work, packing a punch similar to Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.” Rihanna’s dynamic scooping vocals weave seamlessly with Shakira’s.
“Coming of Age” – Foster the people
Departing from the hidden radio voice of their previous album, “Coming of Age” features a close, upfront vocal track counterbalanced by a faint Beach Boys style background vocals in the distance to produce a surprisingly optimistic feel. The chorus chants “Feels like a coming of age” in unison with our spring semester feelings.

Film:
Her – January 10
We’ve all fake proposed to Siri, but how far are we from willingly acknowledging that human touch can replace artificial companionship? Joaquin Phoenix’s glasses-fidgeting mannerisms are warmed by Scarlett Johansson’s version of a computer-voice lover in this drama about the future of technology’s relationship with love. Yet, with its polaroid light and vintage closet, it asks refreshingly time-transcending questions that are undistracted by the cliché sci-fi setting.

That Awkward Moment – January 31
Celebrating that transitory in-between-stage between casual hook up and official relationship, this bromance comedy replete with expletives and man-to-man bonding is a romantic comedy that’s finally made for guys. And let’s face it, with Miles Tyler’s baby face, Zac Efron’s charm and Michael B. Jordan’s abs its not like any girlfriends will be dragged to the movies either.
